Hebrews 11 is a wonderful chapter in God’s Word that explains, by definition and example, what true faith really is. Everyone places their faith in something or someone. The Bible insists that we are to personally put our faith and trust in Jesus Christ (Acts 4:12).
I. Some common misconceptions about faith:
A. Faith is NOT just an adherence to a set of beliefs. – 2 Tim. 1:12b
B. Faith is NOT a blind leap into the dark.
C. Faith is NOT just the recognition that something is true. – James 2:19
II. There are at least 4 different ways that the word “faith” is used in the New Testament.
A. It is the means by which we become a child of God. – Eph. 2:8 – we are saved by grace through faith!
B. It refers to an attitude that pleases God. – Heb. 11:6
C. It is also described as a fruit of the Spirit (faithfulness – Gal. 5:22). Here the reference is to being submissive and reliable.
D. Hebrews 11:1 defines what true godly faith is: “Now faith is the assurance (or substance) of things hoped for, the conviction (or evidence) of things not seen.” – also see Ps. 19:1; Heb. 11:2; Matt. 25:23; Heb. 11:3-5
III. What must we have in order to display a GODLY faith in our lives?
A. A GODLY faith requires vision! – Prov. 29:18 (KJV)
B. A GODLY faith requires courage! – John 16:33b
C. A GODLY faith results in fruit! Walking by faith generates enthusiasm, stimulates prayer (Matt. 17:20), motivates to sacrifice, and produces harmony (unity)!
Have YOU responded in FAITH to what God has done for you through Jesus?
