One of the reasons Jesus died was so that he could establish or build His church (Matthew 16:13-18). Starting in the book of Acts, we have the example of many great men and women who sacrificed to build the Church of Christ. So if Jesus established His church, and great men and women sacrificed to build His church, there’s a reason it exists. And this text from Hebrews chapter 10 speaks to us about why it is important to assemble together in unity.
I. We have the special privilege of being able to “draw near” to God through His Son Jesus! – Heb. 10:19-22
A. The way to the presence of God has now been opened for us by the blood of Jesus!
B. Our confidence to “draw near” comes from the fact that Jesus lives to intercede on our behalf! – Heb. 7:25; 10:20-21
C. Notice the 4 ways we “draw near” to God in verse 22:
1. “with a sincere heart” – a heart of integrity
2. “in full assurance of faith” – Heb. 11:1
3. “having our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience” – Our thoughts and emotions will become purer!
4. “Our bodies are washed with pure water” – a reference to our baptism – Acts 22:16; Eph. 5:26b; Titus 3:5
II. We are to “hold fast” and “stimulate one another” by “assembling together”! – Heb. 10:23-25
A. To “hold fast” is found many times in the New Testament. – 1 Thess. 5:21; Rev. 2:25; 3:11; Heb. 3:6; 4:14 – we “hold fast… without wavering” – James 1:6
B. To “stimulate one another” means to excite or to stir up. – 1 Cor. 12:26
C. We are warned by God to not be “forsaking our assembling together”! – Heb. 10:25
D. You simply cannot worship “in spirit and in truth” as Jesus said we must (John 4:24) when we willfully forsake the assembly of the saints. See the example of Jesus (Luke 4:16).
The willful forsaking of the assembly is nothing more than having the wrong priorities in life. We have become much too busy. The answer to the problem is simply the need to grow in our faith. Have YOU made it a priority to “assemble together in unity”?
